Will I lose control? This is one of the most common questions new clients ask me.
It is not surprising as many people’s encounters with hypnosis are through stage hypnotherapy where people are performing often silly or embarrassing stunts in a show.
If this is also a question you have; No, you do not lose control. You are aware of what is going on. You are being guided to a relaxed state where you are able to access your subconscious memories, beliefs and thoughts.
If we were to measure your brain waves using an EEG (1), it would be possible to see 5 different brain waves.
1) Gamma – 27 Hz and up – High performance
2) Beta – 12 – 27 Hz – Alert and focused
3) Alpha – 8 – 12 Hz – Relaxed
4) Theta – 3 – 8 Hz – Deeply relaxed
5) Delta – 0.2 – 3 Hz – Asleep
When going into hypnosis, we are moving from the Beta stage into the Alpha and Theta states. At the Alpha state, this is the beginning hypnosis and visualization state and at the Theta state, this is the meditation, deep hypnosis and light sleep state.
The alpha state allows us conscious access to the unconscious material located in our subconscious mind. We are able to guide to the root and the cause of the issue presented, allowing our conscious minds to understand and process the information.
So let me put your mind at ease. You do not lose control!
