It’s a famous song line (1) and usually applied to people and relationships. However, this lyric sprung into my head recently due to more of a physical inconvenience.
I’ve lived in the same flat for almost 14 years now and we have this great little train that takes us from our closest stop Binz station to Zurich main station. It takes just 5-minutes on the train. Over the summer, they decided to do some maintenance work and the train was not running – it was not running for a good couple of months.
I did not realise how much I used that train. You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. Getting to the main station was now a 25 minute journey. Things that we took for granted like connections could no longer be taken for granted. We had to take the tram, walk or use another train station.
We managed to find alternatives and as human beings, we adapt so we very quickly got used to the new situation. However, it was an inconvenience that a lot of us felt. The good thing about Switzerland is that most of the time they stick to their deadlines. So now the train is back, I am so relieved and grateful.
It’s important to recognize the things that work in our lives and appreciate what we have.
