A few years ago, I watched a video of a Navy Admiral telling people that if they wanted to change the world, they should make their bed. You may have seen it before and I still encourage you to watch it again – it’s a truly inspirational speech that gives a lot of hope.
I was recently reminded of this as a client said to me that when he listened to his audio recording in the morning, it set the right tone for the day. I’ve been starting my day with meditation and it has the same effect, it sets the right tone for the day. I’m in the right frame of mind and that continues throughout.
Going back to the video, the Admiral talks about doing the small things right because if you can’t do that, you can’t do the big things right. So often we want to accomplish big things but these big things are all made of smaller parts, so by consistently working on getting these smaller parts done well, we are on track to achieve what we want.
The stories he shares throughout his experience of training as a SEAL are impressive, what these men put themselves through to challenge themselves in every sense of the word, physically, mentally and emotionally and they do all this by starting with one simple task – making their bed.
What do you do to set the right tone for the day?
