Imagine every interaction ending with you on a high note
This phrase came into use in the 1920s and 1930s where a singer would impress their audience by ending their song on a difficult high note.
We are currently doing some training with our little boy and we try to end each session on a high note. If the last exercise didn’t work out, we do something that we know he can do and so he feels good about it. It’s so that he associates the learning with a positive feeling and looks forward to working with us again.
What is a high note? A high note could be different things. It reminds me of cliffhangers where episodes or series end with you wondering what happens next? It can also be an invitation to work on something new in the future, like a piano teacher playing a new piece of music or a gymnastic teacher showing a new move and saying that will be what you are working on next. It could be a big hug or a parting gift to say thanks for the wonderful time together.
Maya Angelou famously quoted that “people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”. So have interactions with people remembering how you made them feel, with love, warmth, and on a high note.
