Finish Emotion Code Certification

What happens when you don’t manage to complete a goal within the time frame you specified? This can happen. One of my 3 goals for this last quarter was to complete the emotion code certification and whilst I am around 80% completed, it’s not fully done.

I could beat myself up for not finishing, but why would I do that? What would it achieve? Better instead to celebrate the progress that has been made, and is ultimately taking me closer to the goal I want to achieve.

I’ve been setting 3 goals for each quarter with my husband and I find that sometimes we can be overambitious and want to do more than we have capacity for. Other times, we make the goals too easy. We have found is that it is a learning process of finding a happy medium. It’s what the author James Clear would call the Goldilocks Rule –

“The Goldilocks Rule states that humans experience peak motivation when working on tasks that are right on the edge of their current abilities. Not too hard. Not too easy. Just right.”

Sometimes when we set goals, we don’t know all the parameters involved so a constant adjustment process is needed. We start reflecting on what worked and what didn’t so we can make changes. In my case, I underestimated the time it would take for some of the client sessions to be considered for the certification. With that information, now I can more carefully forecast how long it will take to complete.

Although I didn’t finish it this quarter, I know I will finish it next. And progress is always my friend
