I was in a mastermind group breakout room and was speaking about how I would love to support parents of children with special needs as well in the future. My son needs extra support through therapists to learn communication skills. We are so lucky to have amazing therapists working with him and that we are grateful for.
Last year, a good friend said to me “Your son will get a lot of support but make sure you have support as parents and a couple too”. She recommended a therapist and my husband and I are so glad that we listened to her advice and regularly speak to someone. Having a place to speak about what is going on in our world is such a relief. We often end up talking about other stuff rather than what’s going on with our son.
In the breakout room, a lady quoted me this Martin Luther King quote about not having to see the whole staircase but taking the first step. Sometimes I want to have everything figured out right from the beginning which often gets me stuck so I was happy to hear this advice. I want to learn how I can best support these parents.
Have you ever been stuck because you want to know exactly what you are doing? By moving forward one step at a time, even if you don’t know what is ahead will get you further.
I would like to interview some parents of children with special needs so if you know of anyone, please could you put us in touch. Many thanks!
