I grew up in a Chinese takeaway.
My parents envisioned a different life for me.
They pushed relentlessly—university was the goal.
University usually leads to a good job.
A good job usually brings a good salary.
A good salary usually secures a good life.
This was my belief. Firm. Unquestioned.
Until one day…
Our son Lucas was identified as autistic. Boom
Finding a supportive school became a struggle. Boom
My long-held beliefs shattered. Boom
Now, I’m learning…
Opening my mind…
Realizing that university isn’t the only path to a good life.
There are myriad ways to success.
We’re thankful to have found an exceptional specialist school for Lucas.
A place where he can learn at his own pace.
Who knows what the future holds?
If your child has special needs, be gentle with yourself.
Expect your old beliefs to be tested.
Expect to be on paths you never expected.
You are not alone
I share my personal stories—some sad, some funny, some out of frustration —to connect with other families on the spectrum. When we received our autism diagnosis, I felt alone. Conversations with other families helped me realize that wasn’t true, we’re not alone.
